Dibrugarh, January 29: In a significant step towards advancing India's clean energy ambitions, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Assam Petrochemicals Limited (APL) and the Deendayal Port Authority for the establishment of an E-Methanol Project at Kandla Port in Gujarat.

The agreement marks a major milestone in Assam's expanding role in the country's transition to sustainable and green energy. The proposed project is expected to promote the production and use of e-methanol, an environmentally friendly fuel that is increasingly being recognized as a viable alternative for the maritime sector and other industries seeking to reduce carbon emissions.
Officials said the initiative aligns with the Government of India's vision of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070 and supports the national strategy to develop cleaner fuels for transportation, shipping, and industrial applications. The project also reflects growing collaboration between the Centre and the states in building a robust green energy ecosystem.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma described the agreement as an important achievement for Assam and a testament to the state's commitment to innovation, industrial development, and environmental sustainability. He noted that Assam Petrochemicals Limited has been playing an increasingly important role in promoting advanced technologies and supporting India's energy transition.
The proposed E-Methanol Project is expected to strengthen the availability of green maritime fuels, helping reduce the carbon footprint of port operations and shipping activities. It is also anticipated to encourage the adoption of sustainable industrial practices while opening new opportunities for technological collaboration and investment.
