Itanagar, Jan 18: Arunachal Pradesh achieved a significant milestone in the field of education by participating for the first time in the prestigious Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) 2026. The national-level examination was conducted on January 18 at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), providing a platform for some of the country’s brightest young mathematical minds.

A team of seven students represented Arunachal Pradesh in the competition, marking the state’s inaugural appearance in the Olympiad. Six participants—Puny Maying, Noni Bangyang, Rocha Rangjang, Ngunngam Wangsu, Mime Rine Pertin, and Merry Tok—were from R.K. Sarada Mission Girls’ School in Khonsa. Hemant Chaudhary from Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Tezu, completed the state’s contingent.
Education officials and academic observers hailed the participation as a landmark achievement, reflecting the growing academic aspirations and capabilities of students from Arunachal Pradesh. They noted that competing in a national-level mathematics competition of such stature demonstrates the state’s increasing focus on academic excellence and talent development.
The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad is regarded as one of the most prestigious competitions for pre-university students in India. It serves as a crucial stage in the selection process for international mathematics olympiads and is designed to identify and nurture exceptional mathematical talent. The examination tests students’ analytical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities beyond the standard school curriculum.
Officials believe that Arunachal Pradesh’s participation will inspire more students across the state to pursue mathematics and other academic disciplines with greater enthusiasm. The initiative is also expected to strengthen a culture of logical reasoning, critical thinking, and scientific inquiry among young learners.
The results of INMO 2026 are expected to be announced between February and March. Meanwhile, educators, parents, and state authorities have extended their best wishes to the participants, expressing confidence that this historic first step will open new opportunities for students from Arunachal Pradesh and pave the way for greater achievements at national and international academic platforms in the years ahead.
