Imphal, January 19: Architects, urban planners, government officials, academicians, and students gathered at the City Convention Centre in Imphal on Monday to celebrate the Foundation Day of the Manipur Architects’ Forum (MAF). The Architects’ Meet, organised by the Manipur Architects’ Forum in association with the Town Planning Department, Government of Manipur, served as a platform for discussing sustainable urban development, climate resilience, and the evolving role of architecture in shaping the state's future.
The event focused on addressing contemporary challenges in urban planning while promoting innovative, environmentally responsible, and inclusive approaches to development. Participants deliberated on the importance of integrating modern planning principles with Manipur's unique cultural and architectural heritage.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Ngangom Uttam Singh, Director of Information and Public Relations, highlighted the expanding role of architects in today's rapidly changing world. He observed that architecture extends far beyond aesthetics, encompassing public safety, environmental sustainability, legal compliance, and social responsibility.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that future building projects comply with statutory regulations while incorporating climate-responsive designs, earthquake-resistant construction, and universal accessibility for persons with disabilities. Emphasising Manipur's rich cultural identity, he also called upon architects to preserve and promote indigenous architectural traditions while embracing modern technologies and sustainable construction practices.
The programme featured several highlights, including the prize distribution ceremony for winners of the World Architecture Day Essay Competition, recognising young talents for their contributions and ideas on architecture and urban development. Senior members of the Manipur Architects' Forum were also felicitated for their longstanding service and contributions to the profession in the state.
A Special Award was presented to Benson in recognition of his role in adopting and promoting the Online Building Permit System (OBPS). Organisers noted that the implementation of the digital system has significantly improved transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the building approval process, supporting better governance and streamlined urban development.

The event also featured technical sessions led by experts on key topics, including climate change, Development Control Regulations, and emerging trends in sustainable urban planning. Speakers shared insights into policy frameworks, regulatory requirements, and best practices for developing resilient cities capable of addressing environmental and infrastructure challenges.
Participants engaged in discussions on integrating sustainability, disaster resilience, heritage conservation, and inclusive design into future urban projects across Manipur. The sessions also explored strategies to balance rapid urbanisation with environmental protection and cultural preservation.
Organisers said the Architects' Meet reflected a shared commitment among professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders to build greener, safer, and more inclusive urban spaces. They reaffirmed the Manipur Architects' Forum's continued role in promoting responsible, context-sensitive, and sustainable architectural practices that contribute to the state's long-term development and improved quality of life.
