Spanning 1.43 kilometres, the modern ropeway project is aimed at transforming the pilgrimage experience by reducing travel time from around 20 minutes to just 6 minutes. Once operational, the ropeway will be capable of carrying over 16,500 passengers daily through 18 modern gondolas, ensuring safer, faster and more comfortable access to one of India’s most revered Shakti Peeths.
The project reflects the vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi”, blending world-class infrastructure with Assam’s timeless spiritual heritage. Apart from easing the journey for pilgrims, the ropeway is expected to reduce road congestion, promote eco-friendly green mobility, and significantly boost local employment and tourism in the Guwahati region.
According to information highlighted in the project details, the ropeway will play a key role in decongesting the narrow hill roads leading to the temple while offering an environmentally sustainable alternative to road transport. Improved connectivity is also expected to benefit local vendors, service providers and the tourism ecosystem around Nilachal Hill.
The Kamakhya Ropeway Project is being seen as a landmark initiative in Assam’s infrastructure development, reinforcing the government’s focus on enhancing pilgrim facilities while preserving cultural and spiritual heritage. Once completed, it is expected to set a benchmark for similar pilgrimage-linked infrastructure projects across the country.
