The event brought together government officials, members of the judiciary, legal experts, human rights advocates, academics and representatives of civil society organizations to discuss the importance of safeguarding fundamental rights and strengthening democratic institutions. The programme also served as a platform to raise awareness about the responsibilities of governments, institutions and citizens in ensuring justice, equality and dignity for all.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Saha emphasized that the protection of human rights is closely linked to the strength and accountability of democratic institutions. He said the four pillars of democracy—the Legislature, Executive, Judiciary and Media—must function effectively and responsibly to ensure that citizens' rights and freedoms are protected.

“Democracy becomes stronger when its institutions remain accountable, transparent and responsive to the needs of the people. The protection of human rights depends on the collective strength of these institutions,” the Chief Minister said.

Dr. Saha highlighted the importance of ensuring equal opportunities, social justice and access to welfare programmes for all sections of society. He noted that a rights-based approach to governance is essential for building an inclusive and progressive society where every citizen can live with dignity and security.

The Chief Minister also referred to the policies and initiatives of the Central Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the focus has consistently been on empowering citizens, ensuring justice and improving access to essential services. He said efforts to expand welfare schemes, improve transparency and strengthen governance mechanisms contribute significantly to the protection of human rights.

“Our government remains deeply sensitive and dedicated to ensuring that every citizen receives justice and lives with dignity. Strengthening human rights is essential for building a progressive society,” Dr. Saha remarked.

He further stressed that human rights are not limited to legal protections alone but also encompass access to education, healthcare, livelihood opportunities and social security. According to him, ensuring these basic rights is critical for reducing inequalities and promoting sustainable development.

The Chief Minister expressed appreciation for the role played by the Tripura Human Rights Commission in addressing grievances, spreading awareness and promoting a culture of accountability. He noted that institutions such as the THRC play a vital role in protecting vulnerable sections of society and ensuring that citizens have access to mechanisms for redressal when their rights are violated.

Speakers at the event discussed various contemporary challenges related to human rights, including social justice, gender equality, child protection and access to legal remedies. They emphasized the need for continued cooperation between government agencies, judicial bodies, civil society organizations and the media to create a stronger human rights framework.

The programme also highlighted the significance of International Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948. Participants reiterated the importance of upholding the principles of equality, freedom and dignity that form the foundation of human rights worldwide.

Concluding his address, Dr. Saha reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to strengthen institutions, improve governance and ensure that the rights and welfare of every citizen remain a priority. He expressed confidence that through collective efforts and greater awareness, Tripura can continue to build a society rooted in justice, inclusiveness and respect for human dignity.
