Lamka, December 9, 2025: The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has issued a sharp condemnation of what it describes as an “irresponsible publicity stunt” carried out by Meitei MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh during his visit to the Kuki-Zo Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) relief camp in Litan Sareikhong, Ukhrul on Monday.
In an official statement (KZC/SIP/PR/029), the Council said the MLA made an unannounced and uncoordinated visit without informing Kuki-Zo leaders, camp authorities, or the district administration. According to the KZC, Khemchand was initially visiting BJP workers in the region and made an impromptu stop at the camp on his return journey.
The statement alleges that the MLA later circulated photos and videos online, “projecting himself as a peace-maker in conflict-torn Manipur,” which the Council said was misleading and inappropriate.
The Council raised a pointed question regarding Khemchand’s absence during the May 3–7, 2023 ethnic violence, when Kuki-Zo families in Imphal and surrounding areas were targeted and displaced.
“What prevented him from speaking then? His silence during the tragedy and sudden concern now do not align,” the KZC said, adding that the wounds from the violence remain fresh and “a symbolic drop-in cannot undo the trauma.”
The KZC further argued that the MLA’s stopover provided no meaningful support or accountability for displaced families. It noted that Meiteis have always travelled freely to Ukhrul and other Kaccha Naga–dominated districts, stating that Khemchand’s visit was neither rare nor significant.
The Council warned that unscheduled visits to Kuki-Zo areas or relief centres - especially amid ongoing ethnic tensions - could lead to misunderstandings or confrontations.
“We reject Khemchand’s attempt to use the suffering of IDPs to build his personal image as a hero or peace-maker,” the statement read.
KZC emphasised that peace-building must take place through proper channels and dialogue, not through “manufactured photo opportunities or viral videos.”
The statement concluded with a reminder that genuine peace requires structured discussion at the appropriate tables, not abrupt appearances meant to influence public perception.
The press release was signed by Ginza Vualzong, Secretary of Information & Publicity, Kuki-Zo Council.
Authorities have not yet commented on the Council’s statement, and MLA Khemchand Singh has also not issued any immediate response.
