Guwahati, Dec 8: The Assam Government on Monday organized the inaugural ceremony of the scooter distribution programme under the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati, reaffirming its commitment to promoting academic excellence and rewarding outstanding student achievement.
The event was attended by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu, who distributed scooters to meritorious students who excelled in the Higher Secondary Final Examination. The initiative is one of the state's flagship education incentive programmes aimed at encouraging students to strive for academic success.
This year, 11,250 students who secured 80 per cent or above in the Higher Secondary examinations were selected as beneficiaries. Among them, 6,860 are female students and 4,390 are male students, reflecting the government's continued emphasis on supporting both academic merit and gender inclusion in education.
Instituted in memory of renowned Assamese linguist, scholar, and educationist Dr. Banikanta Kakati, the merit award has emerged as a significant incentive for students across Assam. Since its launch during the 2017–18 academic year, the scheme has benefited 1,85,442 meritorious students, with the state government investing approximately ₹1,043 crore to recognize and encourage academic excellence.
Addressing the gathering, Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu congratulated all the award recipients for their hard work and dedication. He also thanked Chief Minister Sarma for consistently supporting initiatives that motivate students to pursue excellence in education and prepare for future challenges.
Officials said the scooter distribution programme not only rewards academic achievement but also provides practical support by improving students' mobility, especially those travelling long distances to colleges and universities.
The Assam Government believes the Dr. Banikanta Kakati Merit Award has played a crucial role in fostering a culture of healthy academic competition, inspiring students to perform better, and strengthening the state's education system. The programme continues to encourage thousands of young learners to pursue higher education with confidence while recognizing their achievements through meaningful incentives.
