Kohima, Dec 15: Kohima Deputy Commissioner B. Henok Buchem, NCS, visited the base camp at Khonoma on Monday to review ongoing efforts to contain the wildfire that has affected parts of the Western Dzükou range, prompting an extensive multi-departmental response involving several government agencies and emergency services.
The Deputy Commissioner was accompanied by SDO (Civil) Sechü-Zubza Imliakum, Nodal Officer Thejangulie Zao, District Commandant of Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF Wopenthung, along with officials from the Police Department, Forest Department, and Fire & Emergency Services.
During the visit, the district administration assessed the operational status of firefighting teams deployed in the affected areas and reviewed the progress made in containing the blaze. The officials interacted with personnel engaged in ground operations and received briefings on the challenges being faced by the response teams.
The inspection focused on evaluating the effectiveness of firefighting strategies, logistical arrangements, availability of equipment, and safety measures for personnel working in difficult conditions. Authorities also reviewed coordination among the various departments involved in the operation to ensure a swift and effective response.
The Western Dzükou region, known for its rich biodiversity, dense vegetation and rugged terrain, presents significant challenges for firefighting operations. Steep slopes, limited accessibility and dry vegetation have complicated efforts to bring the wildfire under control. Officials noted that despite these difficulties, firefighting teams have continued to work tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading further into ecologically sensitive areas.
The administration emphasized that protecting the region’s unique ecosystem remains a top priority. Efforts are also focused on safeguarding nearby communities, minimizing environmental damage and ensuring the safety of all personnel involved in the operation.
District authorities reaffirmed their commitment to providing adequate resources, logistical support and continuous monitoring until the situation is fully stabilized. The Deputy Commissioner commended the dedication of the firefighters, volunteers and officials engaged in the operation and urged all agencies to maintain close coordination.
Officials stated that containment efforts remain ongoing and further updates will be issued as the firefighting operation progresses.
