48 Acres and 32 Acres of Illegal Poppy Fields Destroyed in Major Anti-Narcotics Drive in Ukhrul District

Ukhrul, Dec 16: In a major crackdown on illegal poppy cultivation, coordinated destruction drives were carried out at two locations in Ukhrul District on Monday as part of the state’s sustained campaign against narcotics production.

48 Acres Cleared at Yaolen–Lamlai Chingphei

A combined team comprising District Police, BSF, Forest Department, and the Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) conducted an extensive drive in the Yaolen–Lamlai Chingphei area, destroying 48 acres of illegal poppy plantations.

Two huts used by cultivators were also burnt down, and officials confirmed that FIRs will be registered as per the law.

32 Acres Destroyed in LM Block

In a separate simultaneous operation in the LM Block area, a joint team of District Police, 6th Manipur Rifles (6 MR), Forest Department, and 18 Assam Rifles destroyed 32 acres of poppy fields.

Three makeshift huts linked to the cultivation were burnt, and legal action will follow with FIR registration.

Crackdown to Continue Until December 20

Authorities announced that the anti-poppy drive will continue till Saturday, 20 December 2025, reinforcing the government’s strong commitment to:

Eradicating illegal poppy cultivation

Preventing narcotics-linked activities

Protecting forest land and biodiversity

Upholding the rule of law

Officials stated that more coordinated operations are planned in vulnerable areas, with security forces and civil agencies working in tandem to ensure long-term suppression of illicit cultivation.
