Aizawl, Nov 6, 2025: In an effort to ensure greater inclusivity and accessibility in the electoral process, election officials in Mizoram's Mamit district successfully conducted home voting for elderly and persons with disabilities ahead of the upcoming Dampa Assembly by-election scheduled for November 11.
The special voting exercise was carried out under the supervision of the Election Commission of India as part of its commitment to enabling all eligible citizens to participate in the democratic process, regardless of age or physical limitations.
Despite adverse weather conditions and intermittent rainfall in the early hours of the day, polling personnel carried out their duties as planned. Four dedicated polling teams were deployed across different locations in the district to facilitate voting at the residences of registered electors who had opted for the home voting facility.
According to election officials, a total of 63 voters had registered to cast their votes from home. Of these, 58 were senior citizens aged 85 years and above, while five were persons with disabilities (PwDs). Officials confirmed that all 63 registered voters were successfully covered during the exercise and were able to exercise their franchise without having to travel to polling stations.
The home voting initiative is part of the Election Commission's broader efforts to make elections more accessible and voter-friendly. The facility allows eligible senior citizens and persons with disabilities to vote from the comfort of their homes through a secure and monitored process, ensuring both convenience and the secrecy of the ballot.
Election authorities stated that adequate measures were taken to ensure transparency and compliance with electoral guidelines during the exercise. Polling teams followed prescribed procedures while visiting each voter, and the process was conducted in the presence of authorized representatives wherever required.
Officials expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the programme and appreciated the cooperation extended by voters and their families. They noted that such initiatives help strengthen democratic participation by ensuring that no eligible voter is deprived of the opportunity to cast a ballot due to age-related or physical challenges.
The main polling for the Dampa Assembly by-election will take place on November 11, 2025, with election authorities making extensive preparations to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful poll.
