Guwahati, Sept 24, 2025: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the untimely death of iconic singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg, who passed away earlier this month under what authorities described as "suspicious circumstances."
Taking to social media on Wednesday, Sarma said he had reviewed the matter with the Director General of Police (DGP), Additional DGP (CID), the Chief Secretary of Assam, and senior officers. Following the meeting, he directed that the SIT, comprising Assam Police’s best investigators, be formed immediately.
“We will not spare anyone. The SIT will have full freedom to investigate the case with complete professional integrity,” Sarma asserted.
As part of the inquiry, the state government has decided to send Garg’s viscera samples to the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL), Delhi, for advanced testing. Officials said this move is aimed at ensuring impartial and scientifically accurate results, as the cause of death has not yet been conclusively established.
Background
Zubeen Garg, widely regarded as the “Voice of Assam” and a cultural icon of the Northeast, passed away on September 17, 2025, sparking widespread grief and raising questions about the circumstances of his death. Known for his soulful voice and hit songs such as Ya Ali and Mayabini, Garg was not only a celebrated singer but also an actor, filmmaker, and philanthropist.
His death has triggered demands from fans, cultural organizations, and student bodies for a thorough and transparent investigation. Several groups have urged the government to uncover the truth and bring justice if any foul play is detected.
Government’s Stand
The Chief Minister’s announcement comes amid growing public pressure for accountability. Senior police officials confirmed that preliminary inquiries have been inconclusive and that the SIT would focus on all possible angles, including medical, forensic, and circumstantial evidence.
“We are committed to a fair and transparent probe. The SIT will coordinate closely with forensic experts in Delhi,” a senior police officer said.
Public Reaction
Fans and admirers across Assam and the Northeast have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the investigation will dispel doubts and ensure justice. Tributes continue to pour in for Garg, whose songs transcended linguistic and cultural boundaries.
