Meitei Man Safely Handed Over After Crossing Buffer Zone in Kangpokpi

IMPHAL, August 20: A resident of Sekmai Makha Leikai, identified as Yumjao Angom, was safely handed over to the police on Tuesday after he reportedly crossed into Sapermeina, a Kuki-dominated village in Kangpokpi district.

According to Manipur Police, the individual had boarded a passenger bus from Imphal to Senapati and was later found stranded in Sapermeina. District Police, Kangpokpi, handed him over to Sekmai Police Station, ensuring his safe return to his native place.

Local accounts said the man identified himself as a resident of Sekmai when approached by villagers. In a humanitarian gesture, community members facilitated his safe transfer to authorities, avoiding any escalation of tension.

The incident, while resolved peacefully, underlines the fragile ground reality in Manipur nearly three years into the ethnic conflict. Despite efforts at reconciliation, the divisions remain stark, with buffer zones and restricted movement continuing to prevent free interaction between Meitei and Kuki communities.
