Aizawl, Aug 6, 2025: Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma held a meeting with National Handloom Development Corporation Limited (NHDC) Managing Director Commodore Rajiv Ashok (Retd) at Mizoram House in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss a range of initiatives aimed at strengthening and modernising the state’s handloom industry.
The discussions focused on enhancing the productivity, sustainability, and market competitiveness of Mizoram’s traditional handloom sector, which serves as an important source of livelihood for thousands of artisans and weavers across the state.
One of the key proposals deliberated during the meeting was the establishment of a yarn warehouse in Mizoram. The facility is expected to improve the availability of raw materials, reduce transportation challenges, and ensure a steady supply of yarn for local weavers.
The Chief Minister and NHDC Managing Director also discussed measures to increase the use of locally produced handloom products in government offices and major institutions. To improve product quality and diversify designs, plans were explored for upgrading production facilities through the introduction of modern electronic Jacquard looms, which can enhance efficiency while preserving traditional weaving practices.

Another important area of discussion was the need to strengthen the skills of weavers through training programmes and capacity-building initiatives. The meeting also emphasized greater collaboration among stakeholders within the state to support the growth of the handloom industry.
Additionally, both sides discussed developing a comprehensive framework under which NHDC experts could provide technical guidance, developmental support, and strategic inputs to Mizoram’s handloom sector. Expanding access to yarn produced from locally cultivated mulberry was also identified as a priority to promote value addition within the state.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma was accompanied by Pi R. Lalrodingi, OSD to the Chief Minister, and Pu Lalrinawma Khiangte, PS to the Chief Minister.
The meeting is expected to pave the way for increased productivity, better market access, and long-term growth of Mizoram’s handloom industry, while preserving the state’s rich weaving heritage.
