Shillong, June 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the state's rapid economic transformation and infrastructure-driven growth while addressing the North East Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition 2026 in Shillong, stating that Meghalaya has emerged as one of the fastest-growing states in India.
Speaking at the summit, Sangma described the event as taking place at a defining moment for the Northeast. He noted that for decades the region faced challenges arising from insurgency, law and order concerns, and political instability, which hindered economic growth and development. However, he said that through political will, improved governance, and a change in mindset, the Northeast has transformed into a region of increasing peace, stability, and opportunity.
Highlighting Meghalaya’s development trajectory, Sangma said the state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has more than doubled from ₹29,508 crore in 2018 to ₹59,626 crore in FY 2024–25, making it one of the fastest-growing states in the country. He noted that the state's strong economic performance reflects sustained efforts to promote development, improve governance, and expand infrastructure.
The Chief Minister further stated that Meghalaya's annual budget has doubled over the past eight years, enabling the government to undertake larger development initiatives and improve public services. He also pointed out that the state's capital expenditure has increased nearly six-fold during the same period, demonstrating a strong commitment to infrastructure-led growth and long-term economic development.
According to Sangma, strategic investments in roads, connectivity, public infrastructure, sports facilities, and urban development have helped create new opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs, and local communities. He stressed that infrastructure remains the foundation for economic growth, employment generation, and improved quality of life.
The Chief Minister also highlighted several major initiatives underway in Meghalaya, including preparations to host the National Games, the construction of what he described as India's largest football stadium, and efforts to improve air connectivity with the introduction of larger commercial flights to Shillong. He said these projects reflect the state's growing confidence and ambition as it seeks to position itself as a major destination for tourism, sports, and investment.
Sangma added that Meghalaya's development story is part of the larger narrative of a rising Northeast, where improved connectivity and infrastructure are helping unlock new opportunities for growth and prosperity. He expressed confidence that the summit would further accelerate the region's development journey and strengthen collaboration among governments, investors, and development partners.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for six National Highway projects worth ₹3,214 crore in Meghalaya during the summit held at New Shillong, underscoring the Centre's commitment to accelerating infrastructure development across the Northeast.
