Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma Reviews Central Schemes During South West Khasi Hills Visit

MAWKYRWAT, May 27: Union Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma on Wednesday visited South West Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, where he reviewed the implementation of various Central and State government welfare schemes and interacted with beneficiaries and district officials.

The Union Minister was accompanied during the visit by Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills Smt. Aitinolin L. Mawlong, IAS, Superintendent of Police Shri B. Jyrwa, MPS, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shri F.B. Basan, MCS, and other district officials.

As part of his official tour, the Minister first visited the Civil Hospital in Mawkyrwat, where he distributed Ayushman Bharat health cards to 20 beneficiaries. The Ayushman Bharat scheme, one of the flagship healthcare programmes of the Government of India, provides financial assistance for medical treatment to economically vulnerable families.

The Minister also inspected Natural Farming activities being implemented under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) at Wahsiej village. Officials briefed him on ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agricultural practices and livelihood opportunities among rural communities in the district.

During his visit to Mawlangwir, Shri Varma interacted with children and Anganwadi workers and reviewed activities related to child welfare and nutrition programmes. He later inaugurated and handed over the key of a Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) house to a beneficiary, highlighting the government’s efforts to provide housing support to rural families.

The Union Minister also visited infrastructure projects at Mawpon, including a footbridge and a water tank-cum-washing platform constructed for community use. A tree plantation programme was also organised during the visit as part of environmental conservation efforts.

Later in the day, Shri Varma chaired a comprehensive review meeting with district heads at the Conference Hall of the Circuit House in Laitlawsang, Mawkyrwat. The meeting focused on assessing the implementation status of major Central government flagship programmes and welfare schemes in the district.

Discussions during the review meeting covered schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), health programmes, and other developmental initiatives.

The Minister interacted with officials regarding challenges faced in implementation, particularly in remote and difficult areas, and reviewed measures being taken to ensure effective delivery of government services to beneficiaries.

According to officials, Shri Varma expressed satisfaction with the district administration’s performance and appreciated the efforts being made to implement government schemes despite logistical and geographical constraints.

He encouraged officials to continue working with dedication towards the development and welfare of the people of South West Khasi Hills district.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Additional Deputy Commissioner Shri F.B. Basan.
