Itanagar, May 8: In a major milestone for healthcare in Arunachal Pradesh, the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) has successfully performed the state’s first interventional radiology (IR) procedure to treat a renal artery pseudoaneurysm.
According to an official release, the procedure was carried out by a team led by Dr Wangju Sumnyan from the Department of Radiology in collaboration with the Cardiology and Urology departments.
The patient, a 40-year-old woman, had developed a pseudoaneurysm in the left renal artery following kidney stone surgery and was admitted with severe pain and blood in her urine.
Doctors treated the condition using endovascular coil embolisation, a minimally invasive image-guided procedure. Through a small puncture in the groin, doctors inserted two metallic coils to seal the bleeding artery, successfully avoiding open surgery.
Hospital authorities stated that the patient is now stable and recovering well.
TRIHMS described the achievement as a significant advancement for healthcare services in Arunachal Pradesh, noting that interventional radiology offers safer, faster and organ-preserving alternatives to conventional surgery.
Dr Wangju Sumnyan, who is also the Deputy Medical Superintendent and Head of the Radiology Department, said the successful procedure demonstrated the institute’s growing expertise in advanced medical technology.

He further emphasised the need for establishing a dedicated interventional radiology cath-lab at TRIHMS to provide world-class treatment facilities within the state.
According to the institute, interventional radiology services would strengthen its ability to manage complex emergencies such as internal bleeding, vascular injuries and tumour embolisation while reducing complications and recovery time for patients.
Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein congratulated the medical team and described the achievement as a landmark moment for the state’s healthcare sector.
“This milestone reflects the rapid progress of our healthcare sector and the commitment of our doctors and medical teams in bringing advanced, minimally invasive and life-saving treatment facilities closer to the people,” Mein said.
He also congratulated Dr Wangju Sumnyan and the teams from the Radiology, Cardiology and Urology departments for the successful procedure and wished the patient a speedy recovery.
TRIHMS stated that with continued public and government support, the institute is steadily progressing towards becoming a leading medical institution in the Northeast.
