Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang walks from Mintokgang to Manan Kendra in Gangtok to attend an official function as the state government implements austerity measures and promotes responsible governance.

The approximately 14-minute walk by the Chief Minister was described by the state government as a symbolic and practical demonstration of its commitment to disciplined and responsible governance following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for austerity and efficient use of public resources.

According to a statement issued by Press Secretary to the Chief Minister, Yougan Tamang, the Chief Minister had similarly attended the Sikkim Kalakar Bharosa Sammelan at Manan Kendra on foot on May 15 and returned the same way while interacting with citizens.

The government stated that the move was intended to send a strong public message that leadership must begin with personal discipline and visible action rather than policy announcements alone.

As part of the austerity measures, the Sikkim government has issued directives for reduced fuel consumption and efficient utilisation of government resources across departments, autonomous bodies, public sector undertakings and other government institutions.

Among the key measures announced is a 50 percent reduction in the Chief Minister’s motorcade. The state will also implement odd-even norms for government and private vehicles, although taxis and emergency services have been exempted.

Government officials and public servants have been encouraged to make maximum use of public transport, minimise unnecessary vehicle usage and rely more on virtual meetings and digital coordination. Officials have also been advised to walk to nearby meetings and official engagements wherever feasible.

The Home Department had earlier issued an official notification on May 14 regarding the adoption of austerity measures.

The state government said the initiative aims to promote responsible governance, accountability and optimum use of public resources while encouraging citizens to participate in collective efforts towards economic discipline and sustainability.
