The appeal was made during a press conference held at the BJP head office in Kohima on April 22. The briefing was addressed by BJP State Executive Member Vineizo Tsiirho, BJP Kohima district president Khrielie Üsou, BJP Mahila Morcha Kohima district president Leanne Kiewhuo and other party leaders.

Addressing the media, the leaders said the press conference was convened to clarify issues surrounding women’s reservation and delimitation, alleging that opposition parties had created confusion and spread misleading statements on the matter. They claimed that the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, is linked to the process of delimitation and that any delay in delimitation would consequently delay the benefits of the reservation.

Leanne Kiewhuo said the BJP remains committed to women’s empowerment and strengthening democratic representation. She stated that increased participation of women in legislative bodies would help bring greater clarity and focus to issues affecting women.

BJP Kohima district president Khrielie Üsou accused opposition parties of misrepresenting the issue of reservation and delimitation, while Vineizo Tsiirho alleged that some political groups had historically attempted to keep women away from Parliament and state assemblies.

The leaders also called on the public to understand the importance of delimitation and the role it plays in enabling the implementation of the reservation policy. They emphasised that women across India are already taking leadership roles at the grassroots level, particularly in Panchayati Raj institutions, and are prepared to contribute more actively in higher legislative bodies.

The BJP leaders further urged political parties to avoid creating division over the issue and instead work collectively to strengthen democratic institutions and ensure greater participation of women in governance.
