Kuki Inpi Manipur rejects formation of ‘popular government’, urges Kuki-Zo MLAs to stay away

Imphal, Feb 4: The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) on Tuesday strongly rejected the move to form a “popular government” in Manipur, describing it as deeply disturbing and ill-advised amid the prevailing fragile law and order situation in the state.

In a press release issued by the KIM Secretariat, the apex body said the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision to form a government at this critical juncture would have grave implications and would further destabilise the already volatile situation. It termed the proposed government a “Meitei-centric political arrangement” incapable of delivering peace, justice or reconciliation, and warned that it would instead embolden what it described as continued domination, persecution and subjugation of the Kuki-Zo people.

The organisation categorically stated that it outrightly rejects the formation of any popular government at present and reiterated its firm position discouraging Kuki-Zo MLAs from associating with or lending legitimacy to such a government under any circumstances. It maintained that participation by Kuki-Zo representatives would disregard the suffering, aspirations and political will of the community.

KIM cautioned that the formation of a popular government at this sensitive moment would neither restore normalcy nor heal the deep fractures caused by prolonged conflict, but would instead risk escalating tensions and instability. While clarifying that it does not claim authority to decide whether a government should or should not be formed, the organisation said it has every right to appeal to elected Kuki-Zo MLAs to respect the will, sentiments and aspirations of the people who elected them.

The statement also accused the BJP of political obstinacy, alleging that its insistence on forming a government lacking moral and political legitimacy demonstrated indifference to ground realities and the consequences for affected communities. It urged the party to abandon the move and instead work towards restoring President’s Rule until a just, durable and acceptable political solution is reached for the Kuki-Zo people.

KIM further opposed any Kuki-Zo MLA joining such a government and said those who choose to do so must publicly explain their decision in light of the Guwahati Conclave resolution. It warned that MLAs taking part would be held fully responsible for the consequences of their actions.

The press release, issued by the Secretary, Information and Publicity of Kuki Inpi Manipur, concluded by stating that if a popular government is formed, the organisation would be compelled to curtail all political activities of political parties in Kuki-Zo areas.
