Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveils the UNESCO World Heritage recognition plaque for the Charaideo Moidams, honouring the Ahom dynasty’s sacred burial tradition.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ceremonially unveiled the plaque of recognition at the Moidam premises, honouring the sacred burial tradition of the Ahom dynasty and the state’s rich civilisational legacy.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the recognition as global acknowledgment of Assam’s unique history and cultural heritage. He said the Moidams - often referred to as the “Pyramids of Assam”- symbolise the spiritual beliefs, architectural excellence and governance traditions of the Ahom rulers who shaped the region for over six centuries.

To ensure long-term preservation of the heritage site, Sarma proposed a series of measures, including promotion of academic and archaeological research, regular conservation and maintenance, active community participation, and the creation of buffer zones around the Moidams. He emphasised that heritage conservation must go hand in hand with sustainable development and local involvement.

The Chief Minister said the UNESCO tag would not only help protect the site but also boost cultural tourism, research and global awareness about Assam’s historical significance. He called upon all stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard the Moidams for future generations.

The Moidams of Charaideo, royal burial mounds of the Ahom kings and nobles, stand as enduring symbols of Assam’s indigenous traditions and are regarded as one of the most important archaeological landscapes in eastern India.
