Jankhiung Kheang Celebrates 75th Platinum Jubilee of Sangkong Lukhi at Sangphur Village

Sangphur, Jan 15, 2026: Sangphur Village witnessed a historic celebration as Jankhiung Kheang marked the 75th Platinum Jubilee of Sangkong Lukhi, commemorating 75 years since its sacred log drum, a revered symbol of the Khiamniungan community’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

The jubilee was celebrated with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour, drawing community members, elders and dignitaries. S. Keoshu, MLA and Advisor for Youth Resources, graced the occasion as the Special Guest. Congratulating the colony members, he praised the unity and cooperation preserved since ancestral times and said the celebration holds significance not only for the Yimkhiungs but for the Naga people as a whole. He highlighted the role of Naga Colony Morungs in preserving heritage and transmitting ancestral knowledge through oral traditions.

Sangphur Village is home to five log drums, with the Jankhiung Kheang log drum, installed in 1951, being the oldest. The log drum holds immense cultural and spiritual value, historically central to community life and governance.

Village Council Chairman K. Rhakiumong underscored the importance of traditional practices associated with the log drum, recalling that six individuals were once specially appointed to guard it, reflecting its sacred status. He also shared the belief that keeping the log drum within the Kheang brings wealth and prosperity to the colony.

Adding historical depth to the event, Lakiumong, Head GB of Sangphur Village—around 115 years old and serving for over 80 years—shared first-hand accounts and the history of the Jankhiung Kheang log drum, drawing admiration from the gathering.

The programme began with an invocation by H. Mahching, Deacon, followed by a welcome address by K. Rhakiumong, Programme Convenor. A special cultural performance by the Jankhiung Kheang Youth showcased traditional expressions and cultural pride.

Also addressing the gathering were Chubatemjen, Deputy Commissioner of Shamator, and Y. Kumtsu Yimchunger, who emphasised the importance of preserving indigenous traditions and cultural identity. The vote of thanks was delivered by GB T. Yimto.

The jubilee stood as a testament to the enduring legacy, unity and heritage of the Khiamniungan people, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding ancestral traditions for future generations.
