The jubilee celebrated the enduring legacy of the sacred log drum, which occupies a central place in the social, cultural and spiritual life of the Khiamniungan people. Installed in 1951, the Jankhiung Kheang log drum is the oldest among the five log drums preserved in Sangphur Village and remains a powerful symbol of community identity and ancestral traditions.

The programme was graced by S. Keoshu, MLA and Advisor for Youth Resources, as the Special Guest. Addressing the gathering, he congratulated the members of Jankhiung Kheang for preserving their rich cultural heritage and maintaining the spirit of unity passed down through generations. He remarked that the celebration was significant not only for the Yimkhiung and Khiamniungan communities but for the Naga people as a whole, as it highlighted the importance of safeguarding indigenous traditions.

Keoshu also emphasized the historical role of Naga Colony Morungs in preserving cultural values, oral traditions and ancestral knowledge. He encouraged younger generations to remain connected to their roots and continue protecting the customs and practices that define their identity.

Village Council Chairman K. Rhakiumong highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of the log drum, noting that it was once regarded as so sacred that six individuals were specifically appointed to guard it. According to traditional belief, the presence of the log drum within the Kheang brings prosperity, harmony and blessings to the community.

One of the most memorable moments of the celebration came when Lakiumong, the Head GB of Sangphur Village, believed to be around 115 years old and having served the village for more than eight decades, shared historical accounts and personal memories related to the Jankhiung Kheang log drum. His recollections provided valuable insights into the village’s past and drew admiration from attendees.

The programme began with an invocation by H. Mahching, Deacon, followed by a welcome address delivered by K. Rhakiumong in his capacity as Programme Convenor. A special cultural performance by the Jankhiung Kheang Youth added colour and vibrancy to the celebration, showcasing traditional songs, customs and expressions of cultural pride.

Deputy Commissioner of Shamator Chubatemjen and Y. Kumtsu Yimchunger also addressed the gathering, stressing the need to preserve indigenous heritage and strengthen cultural identity in a rapidly changing world. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by GB T. Yimto.
