Silchar, December 2025: In a major push toward improving regional connectivity and transportation infrastructure in Cachar district, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a new RCC bridge over the Barak River at Gandhighat.
The bridge, once completed, will directly connect Madhuramukh with Silchar town, offering a faster and more efficient route for thousands of daily commuters. Currently, residents rely on longer, more congested routes to travel between the two banks of the Barak.
According to officials, the upcoming bridge will reduce travel distance by nearly 8 kilometres, significantly easing daily movement for local residents. The reduced distance is expected to lower fuel consumption, decrease travel time, and offer substantial savings for both private vehicle users and commercial transporters.
Local businesses and traders, who depend heavily on smooth connectivity for the movement of goods, are also expected to benefit from the improved accessibility. The new bridge is seen as a catalyst for boosting economic activity, encouraging local trade, and supporting the region’s development.
Residents of the area have welcomed the foundation-laying ceremony, expressing hope that the project will bring long-awaited relief from travel inconveniences and open new opportunities for growth on both sides of the Barak River.
The construction of the RCC bridge forms part of the State Government’s broader commitment to strengthen infrastructure, expand road and bridge networks, and enhance connectivity across Assam.
