Five New Foot Overbridges with Escalators to Come Up on NH27 Guwahati Bypass

Guwahati, Aug 5, 2025: In a major initiative to improve pedestrian safety and road infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the construction of five new foot overbridges (FOBs) equipped with escalators along the busy Guwahati Bypass of National Highway 27 (NH27). The project is aimed at providing safer and more convenient road crossings for pedestrians while reducing the risk of accidents on one of the city's busiest highway stretches.

According to officials, the foot overbridges will be constructed at five strategic locations that witness heavy pedestrian movement and traffic congestion. These include Jalukbari near Assam Engineering College, Tetelia, Gorchuk near the CPWD Office, Royal Global University Point, and Lalmati near Games Village.

The selected locations are home to educational institutions, residential areas, commercial establishments, and government offices, where a large number of students, commuters, and local residents cross the highway every day. The addition of escalators is expected to make the overbridges more accessible for senior citizens, children, persons with disabilities, and others who may find climbing stairs difficult.

Apart from the construction of the foot overbridges, the NHAI will also install streetlights along the entire 18-kilometre stretch of the Guwahati Bypass. The lighting project is intended to improve visibility during night-time, enhance road safety, and reduce the chances of accidents involving both vehicles and pedestrians.

Officials said the combined infrastructure improvements will significantly enhance traffic management and pedestrian safety while supporting the growing transportation needs of Guwahati. The project is also expected to encourage more pedestrians to use designated crossing points, thereby minimising unsafe road crossings.

The initiative forms part of NHAI's broader efforts to modernise national highway infrastructure by integrating safety-focused features into road development projects. Once completed, the new foot overbridges and improved lighting system are expected to provide a safer, more efficient, and commuter-friendly travel experience for thousands of people who use the Guwahati Bypass every day while contributing to smoother traffic flow along the important NH27 corridor.
