CM Tamang Extends Greetings on 34th Bhasa Manyata Diwas, Calls for Preservation of Nepali Language

GANGTOK, Aug 20: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday extended warm greetings to the people of Sikkim and the global Nepali-speaking community on the 34th Bhasa Manyata Diwas, describing it as a day of historical significance, cultural pride and collective struggle.

In his message, the Chief Minister said the occasion not only commemorates the recognition of Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution but also reflects the resilience and sacrifices of the community. “I extend my heartfelt reverence and gratitude to all the seniors, scholars, literary figures, leaders and community members whose tireless efforts led to this achievement. Their contributions will remain immortal in the hearts of every Nepali-speaking individual,” he said.

Speaking at the state-level celebration held at Mangalbaria in Soreng district, Tamang recalled August 20, 1992 as a “historic day” when Nepali was included in the Eighth Schedule. “This recognition was not merely about a language, but about safeguarding the identity, dignity and constitutional rights of Indian Nepali-speaking people,” he noted.

The Chief Minister underlined that language serves as the bridge between past and future, carrying with it culture, stories and collective wisdom. “While thousands of languages across the world face extinction, it is our responsibility to preserve, nurture and promote our mother tongue so that future generations inherit not just words, but an entire heritage,” he stressed.

He also appealed to all Nepali-speaking people to remain united in promoting and strengthening their language globally. “Our language is our pride and identity. It is the most precious legacy we can offer to the future generations,” he added.

Bhasa Manyata Diwas commemorates the historic inclusion of Nepali in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India in 1992, following decades of efforts by leaders, writers, scholars and community members. The day continues to inspire the Nepali-speaking community to protect their linguistic and cultural heritage.
