Manipur Govt Rebuts Claim That State Has No Power to Control Situation, Says Authority Lies With Centre

Imphal, April 26: The Government of Manipur has issued a press rejoinder clarifying remarks attributed to a woman following a meeting with the Chief Minister amid the ongoing agitation led by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI).

Manipur ministers address the media in Imphal, clarifying the state government’s position on the ongoing situation and responding to claims about authority resting with the Centre.

According to the statement released by the Office of the Public Relations Officer at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, a woman identified as Thingbaijam Debala of Kshetrigao in Imphal East had briefed media persons after meeting the Chief Minister and allegedly stated that the state government had no power to control the prevailing situation, claiming that authority rested with the Centre.

The government said the comments, which appeared in local Manipuri evening newspapers including Kangla Pao and Paojel, were not related to the Chief Minister’s meeting with representatives of agitators from various parts of Imphal.

The statement further described the remarks as a misrepresentation of facts, asserting that they did not reflect the views expressed by the Chief Minister during his interaction with the Meira Paibis.

The government also suggested that the statement could be an attempt to undermine the administration’s efforts to restore law and order and promote peace in the state.

In the rejoinder, authorities urged media organisations to maintain the highest standards of journalistic ethics and ensure that news items are properly verified and cross-checked before publication.
