Mamit, Feb 5: Mizoram Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar on Wednesday inaugurated the Mamit Multipurpose Indoor Stadium along with Girls’ Hostels at Mamit and Damparengpui, marking a significant boost to sports infrastructure in the district.

Addressing the gathering, the minister said the new facilities would play a vital role in meeting the sporting needs of the people of Mamit and nurturing young talent. He appreciated the efforts of the local MLA and stakeholders for their initiative in bringing the project to fruition. Emphasising fair and inclusive use of the stadium, he urged the District Sports Committee to ensure transparent management and optimal utilisation of the facility to groom athletes capable of competing at state, national and even international levels.
Highlighting India’s ambition to host the Olympic Games in 2036, the minister said Mizoram must strengthen both infrastructure and human resource development to ensure Mizo athletes can make their mark. He said the state government is actively working to help sportspersons win medals at national and international competitions through targeted interventions.

Under the government’s flagship programme Bana Kaih – Empowering Mizoram Sports, the minister said talented children are being identified and trained across multiple disciplines, including wrestling, weightlifting, volleyball, taekwondo, hockey, archery and badminton. He added that district sports committees could approach the department for further guidance and support.
The minister also spoke about ongoing development initiatives in Mamit, including road improvement works along NH-44A, stating that necessary work orders have already been issued and discussions held with concerned central ministers.
Mamit MLA Er. H. Lalzirliana, who attended the event as the chief guest, expressed hope that the new stadium would help produce skilled sportspersons from the district who could excel at higher levels.
The programme was chaired by Henry C. Lalrawnkima, Secretary of the Mizoram State Sports Council, and attended by K. Laltlawmlova, District Sports Officer and Chairman of the District Sports Committee.
According to officials, the Mamit Multipurpose Indoor Stadium was constructed at a cost of ₹12.5 crore under SEDP and SASCI funding. Construction began on April 12, 2021, and was completed on June 10, 2025. The three-storey building, including a basement and gallery level, measures 50 metres in length and 30 metres in width, and was executed by the Mizoram Development Agency.
Later in the day, the minister also visited the Excise and Narcotics Office in Mamit to review departmental functioning and discuss challenges faced by officials.
