Shillong, Jan. 15: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday reiterated that the State Government will move forward with the proposed railway project in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region only after extensive consultations and consensus-building among all stakeholders.

Addressing concerns surrounding the sensitive issue, the Chief Minister said the government is committed to dialogue and will not take any unilateral decision. He expressed disappointment over the poor attendance of political parties at the all-party meeting convened to discuss the railway proposal, urging opposition parties to participate constructively in the consultative process.
“The railway issue is sensitive, and we have been very clear that we will only move forward once there is dialogue, discussion and some form of agreement on how we proceed together,” Sangma said. He noted that despite inviting all political parties for discussions, several parties chose not to attend, with some even formally declining participation.
The Chief Minister emphasised that meaningful engagement is essential to address differing views. “Whether we agree or disagree, without talking we will not reach anywhere. If discussions are avoided and later concerns are raised, it only complicates the process,” he said.
Sangma clarified that the government has no intention of pushing the project forward without consensus. “We will not move ahead with anything unless there is some level of agreement. Consultation remains the foundation of our approach,” he added.
He further stated that the State Government will continue engaging with civil society groups, political parties and local communities to explain the potential benefits of the railway project, address apprehensions and build clarity. Only after this process, he said, will the proposal be taken forward with the Centre.
While acknowledging that railway connectivity is crucial for the economic development of Meghalaya, particularly for trade and mobility in the Khasi Jaintia Hills region, the Chief Minister stressed that the project would be handled with due care, sensitivity and inclusiveness.
