Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said the party had completed the process of selecting candidates earlier, but the GHADC polls - initially scheduled for April 10 - were postponed following violent protests over the issue of non-tribal participation.

Despite the delay, he reiterated that the UDP remains fully prepared and intends to field candidates in every constituency.

Lyngdoh said the party had received a positive response during the candidate selection process, indicating growing support in the Garo Hills region.

“This time when we started the selection of candidates, the response was not bad; it is good, I should say,” he said, adding that the candidates chosen for the polls appear promising and capable of performing well in the election.

“The candidates this time also seem to be very promising. We will definitely try to see our candidates sail through in the upcoming GHADC election,” he added.

Responding to questions about the Lumpongdeng Island issue, Lyngdoh said he was not fully aware of the details as the matter falls under the tourism department. However, he noted that the government had reportedly decided to stay away from Lumpongdeng and allow other processes to move forward.

Addressing allegations that the issue was being politicised, the UDP leader said he could not comment extensively without full knowledge of the agreement but believed the government had taken the decision in the broader interest of the public.
